Daniel MacPherson is a revelation here. This is not the performance of a movie star trying to look tough — it is a performance of quiet, loaded restraint that suddenly detonates when the moment demands it. MacPherson trained ferociously for this role, and the physical commitment is visible in every frame. More importantly though, he brings emotional credibility to a character who could easily have been just another underdog cliché. Patton James is a man fundamentally addicted to the one thing that is slowly destroying him — and MacPherson plays that contradiction with devastating honesty.
